I bike miles a year on this trail. There is a lot of wildlife, especially chipmunks, deer, and squirrels. Just watch out for chipmunk nests in some sections of trail. The trail is fairly quiet, and many sections are far from the noise of heavy traffic. A couple of roads are tricky to cross due to heavy traffic, but for the most part, intersections have rarely posed a challenge. If I had to rank Michigan trails, Kal is easily in my top 3. My childhood trail May, by antonyrailtrail Just a wonderful trail through untouched landscapes in Western Michigan. Goes right by my childhood home and street.
Rules of Ranging – Dating a Ranger
May 1, Expires: November 1, This quest focused on something near and dear to my heart — exploring parks! I also appreciate the many state, county and local parks along the way. This is written by a ranger, focusing on the law enforcement area, including search and rescue in the parks.
Park rangers are found working for municipal and county parks departments, state park systems and for the National Park Service (NPS). Whether at the local, state or national level, becoming a park ranger begins by meeting the education and experience requirements of the prospective employer.
The entire experience can be enriched, however, by learning something about what you are doing or seeing. Whether the facts are historical or geographical, they help us to appreciate the significance of what is before us. If we take part in guided Grand Canyon walking tours , or bus tours, there is often a tour guide who can fill us in on the interesting background to what we are seeing.
However, many visitors hike, bike, or drive themselves to the various points of interest around the Grand Canyon South Rim and other areas of the park. For the convenience of the many visitors who fit this profile, Grand Canyon National Park offers an interesting marriage of wilderness experience with technology.
With funding support from the Grand Canyon Association, visitors can listen to a narration about many points of interest on their cellphone. The calls will use minutes, but there is no additional charge beyond that. One caveat is that audio quality will depend on the signal reception for your particular cellphone carrier. However, signal strength is bound to vary between carriers, and to get weaker as you enter further into wilderness areas.
The audio tours can also be listened to from home. By dialing the number, and pressing any stop number between 1 and 30, you can hear these informative narrations even without visiting the Grand Canyon physically. Some of the subjects and points of interest which are included are Yaki Point No. So whether you are visiting the Grand Canyon in person, or would just like to learn more from home, give the audio tour service a try.

Marine Park surrounds the westernmost inlet of Jamaica Bay. The bay is one of several formed during the last years as ocean currents deposited sand in a series of long strips off the south shore of Long Island. These strips of beach form a barrier against the surf and allow salt marshes to grow in the calm water on their protected bay side.
Gerritsen Creek was a freshwater stream that once extended about twice as far inland as it does today. Around the creek north of Avenue U was converted into an underground storm drain. Yet it continues to supply the salt marsh with fresh water, which helps the marsh support a wide range of organisms. Broad expanses of fertile salt marsh, meadows adorned with wildflowers, sandy dunes held in place by beach plants, and jungle-like thickets of shrubs and vines dominate the landscape of Marine Park.
Myrtle warblers, grasshopper sparrows, cotton-tailed rabbits, ring-necked pheasants, horseshoe crabs, and oyster toad fish are a small sampling of the animals that inhabit these plant communities and live in or around Gerritsen Creek. The creek was probably a favorite hunting and fishing spot for Indians living in the nearby Keshawchqueren village. Archaeological excavations in Marine Park have revealed food preparation pits dating from to A.

Starting with the founding of Yellowstone National Park, in , National Parks have become one of the most important ways that natural treasures and important cultural sites have been protected and preserved for us and the generations to follow us. Our family has really enjoyed using the sites protected by the National Park Service , both on trips and locally in St. Some of these sites are very accessible to children and really tap into their senses of awe and wonder about the world.
But other sites, like National Battlefields and historical sites like Presidential homes, are not so relatable for children. Fortunately, there is a great program for children at many of these parks: About half of the areas owned or administered by the National Park Service provide these gateways for children to interact with and understand the National Parks and the legacies they protect.
At the MLK Memorial , we found a ranger and asked her about the program, and she returned with an activity book for our kids to work on. D and M, who were 6 and 4 years old at the time, loved the books. We went from Presidential monuments to war memorials across the western end of the Mall finding details we would have otherwise overlooked and asking questions of Rangers. When our survey of the sites was complete, we went to the Ranger Station.
As a National Park Ranger, I pledge to do my best to protect and preserve our National Parks and the lands in my community. Not only did the boys learn a lot more than they would have without the booklet, but also so did we.

Ranger Creed Download PDF Recognizing that I volunteered as a Ranger, fully knowing the hazards of my chosen profession, I will always endeavor to uphold the prestige, honor, and high esprit de corps of the Rangers. Acknowledging the fact that a Ranger is a more elite Soldier who arrives at the cutting edge of battle by land, sea, or air, I accept the fact that as a Ranger my country expects me to move further, faster and fight harder than any other Soldier.
Never shall I fail my comrades. I will always keep myself mentally alert, physically strong and morally straight and I will shoulder more than my share of the task whatever it may be, one-hundred-percent and then some. Gallantly will I show the world that I am a specially selected and well-trained Soldier. My courtesy to superior officers, neatness of dress and care of equipment shall set the example for others to follow. Energetically will I meet the enemies of my country.
I shall defeat them on the field of battle for I am better trained and will fight with all my might. Surrender is not a Ranger word. I will never leave a fallen comrade to fall into the hands of the enemy and under no circumstances will I ever embarrass my country. Readily will I display the intestinal fortitude required to fight on to the Ranger objective and complete the mission though I be the lone survivor.
